Haywood County Braces for Possible Historic Flooding
Haywood County -- September 26, 2024: Haywood County Health & Human Services: Haywood Cunty bracing for possible
historic flooding.
FLASH FLOODING: Widespread flash flooding is expected, with some areas at risk of catastrophic and potentially fatal flooding.
LANDSLIDES: There is a high degree of confidence that landslides and debris outflows occur during the heaviest rains, from tonight (Thursday 9/26) through Friday afternoon.
Wind: 45 to 60 mph wind gusts are expected tonight into Friday morning, likely to cause fallen trees and power outages.
FLOOD ALERT: There is a flash flood warning until 2pm Friday.
Rain Regime: Today's rains come from the southeast, with a similar trajectory to Tropical Storm Fred.
STATE OF EMERGENCY: The County is under a local state of emergency, which includes Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Clyde and Canton.
Search and Rescue: A 35-person Search and Rescue (USAR) team arrives today and will set up at Haywood Community College.
SHELTER: Haywood County will open an emergency shelter at the Armory, located at 235 Armory Drive in Clyde, at 3:00 p.m. today. Residents seeking shelter can arrive at any time after opening. If you have medicines, oxygen, or other medical needs, take them with you.

Important Pet Information: If you plan on bringing a pet to the shelter, make sure you have the following:
-All pets MUST be in a cage.
-All pets MUST wear collar/leashes with appropriate tags (North Carolina law requires rabies vaccination).
-Feeders and Drinkers
- Food / Toiletries
-Cleaning supplies (sand, bags, etc.) )
WELCOME CENTER: The Fines Creek Community Center has opened its doors as a welcome center where people can shelter from the rain, recharge and relax.
