Asheville --  A motor vehicle accident that claimed a life in west Asheville on Thursday afternoon is being investigated by the Asheville Police Department.

On June 26, at approximately 1:55 p.m., officers responded to an injury-causing motor vehicle collision on Interstate 40 East close to Mile Marker 45.  William Robinson was operating a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette on I-40 heading east when it may have had a mechanical problem and stopped in the center lane, according to the preliminary inquiry.

Additionally, a 2016 Ford Escape was heading east when it was rear-ended by the Corvette because it was unable to stop in time.  The Corvette caught fire as a result of the incident, but the Asheville Fire Department put it out.  Robinson's injuries caused him to pass away at the site; his next of kin has been informed.  The Ford Escape's driver and passenger were taken to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

While officers worked the area, I-40 East was closed for three and a half hours.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing. Upon completion of the investigation, the Asheville Police Department will consult with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office.
