Swannanoa River Road Reopening After Six Months
Asheville -- A vital East Asheville corridor is finally set to reopen. After six months of closure due to extensive damage caused by Helene in September 2024, Swannanoa River Road (N.C. 81) will reopen to traffic on Friday afternoon, April 4, 2025.
The road sustained major structural damage during the storm, including washouts, landslides, and severe flooding that forced a full shutdown between Biltmore Avenue and South Tunnel Road. This closure impacted thousands of daily commuters, local residents, and emergency response routes in the area.
Since the storm, a coordinated recovery effort has been underway, involving:
Rebuilding damaged roadbed sections
Utility infrastructure restoration
Slope stabilization and debris removal
Drainage and culvert work to prevent future washouts
A portion of the corridor—from Fairview Road to Tunnel Road—reopened in January. The remaining stretch is now safe for use and has passed inspection, with all major repair work completed.
Drivers Should Know:
Full access will be restored along the entire corridor between Biltmore Avenue and South Tunnel Road
Crews may remain in the area for final utility adjustments and cleanup
Temporary traffic control and cones may be in place—caution is advised
The reopening marks a key milestone in the region’s recovery and reestablishes an essential route connecting neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and healthcare facilities across East Asheville.
