Haywood County -- Press Release Haywood County Government: Five Cases of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Reported in Haywood County -

Haywood County Health and Human Services has confirmed five cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in children and teens under the age of 19 in Haywood County.

Two of those individuals have been hospitalized.

“We are seeing isolated cases in Haywood County, and we want our residents to understand that pertussis is here, and we need to be cautious,” said Dr. Sarah Banks, Haywood County Public Health Director. “The increase in cases is an important reminder that vaccination is the single most effective way to prevent pertussis and reduce the severity of the disease.”

Whooping cough is a serious illness that spreads easily when people cough or sneeze. It causes strong coughing fits that can make it hard to breathe, eat, or sleep. It is especially dangerous for babies, pregnant women, and people with weak immune systems.

Common Symptoms of Whooping Cough:

-Long or severe coughing fits
-A “whooping” sound when breathing in after a cough
-Vomiting after coughing
-Runny nose or stuffy nose
-Mild fever (or no fever at all)
-How to Protect Yourself and Others:
-Get vaccinated:
Vaccines are the best way to prevent whooping cough. Here’s what the CDC recommends:
-Babies and young children should get shots at 2, 4, 6, and 15–18 months, and again at 4–6 years
-Pre-teens should get a booster shot around age 11 or 12
-Adults should get a Tdap booster if they haven’t had one
-Pregnant women should get a Tdap shot during each pregnancy (between 27–36 weeks)
-Stay home when sick:
If you or your child has a cough or other symptoms, stay home from work, school, or daycare to avoid spreading it.
-Practice good hygiene:

Wash your hands often and cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
Vaccines are available at Haywood Health and Human Services, located at 157 Paragon Parkway in Clyde. We can assist both insured and uninsured patients. Call 828-452-6675 to make an appointment or ask questions.
