CANTON, NC - Canton Police Department posted the following on Face Book Thursday January 3, 2019 


The Canton Police Department arrested Jonathan Matthew Jones, age 32, at 5:00pm on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. 

Officers with Canton Police made contact with Jones at the Single Stop II on Radio Hill after being dispatched in reference to a subject (Jones) being at the location having numerous outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Upon arrival to the location, Jones was discovered in a vehicle with another male and a female.
Jones was advised of the outstanding warrants was asked to exit the vehicle. While searching Jones’ person incident to arrest an unknown substance was found in his pants pocket that Jones described as “TNT”.
The substance was moved to a secure location and the Asheville Police Department Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit was contacted. The substance was later found to be a primed explosive being a mixture of ammonium nitrate and other chemicals. APD EOD Unit transported it to a secure location and destroyed.
Jones was arrested and transported to the Haywood County Detention Center where he was charged with felony possession of a weapon of mass destruction and resisting a public officer. Jones was given a $45,000 secured bond.
The female in the vehicle, Julie Guffey, who is Jones girl-friend was also charged with resisting a public officer and was issued a written promise to appear in court.
The driver of the vehicle was not charged.
