The decedent in the August 27, 2024, officer-involved shooting incident on Chatham Road has been identified as Chad Owen Herman (10/30/1965); next of kin has been notified.
The City of Asheville contract employee received treatment at Mission Hospital, has been released, and is now recovering at home.
The Asheville Police Department is committed to transparency and recognizes the importance of information sharing.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is conducting an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting. Once complete, the case will be referred to the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office consistent with established protocols.

Original Press Release: August 27, 2024: 

Press Release Asheville Police Department: A man who pointed a rifle at police officers and other citizens is dead following an officer-involved shooting.

Around 5:00 this evening, several people called 9-1-1 to report a man pointed a rifle at them. The man also assaulted a City of Asheville contract worker with a shovel. Shortly thereafter, officers arrived and ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he refused. The man pointed his rifle at officers and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The man then retreated inside his home on Chatham Road and barricaded himself inside, where he was later found to be deceased.

Per the Asheville Police Department’s protocol, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) was contacted and will conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
