Asheville -- July 19, 2024: Asheville Police Department Press Release: Asheville Police Department Patrol Officers

investigate a fatal collision in the East Asheville area in which a cyclist was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon.


The preliminary investigation indicated Alexander Rozos (01/10/98) was on a bicycle traveling west near the 300 block of Swannanoa River Road around 11:42 a.m. on July 18 when he was struck by a white box truck traveling in the same lane and direction. The driver of the vehicle left the scene before officers arrived. Rozos succumbed to his injuries while on scene; next of kin has been notified.

After further investigation by officers, the vehicle and driver were located later that afternoon.
Upon completion of the Asheville Police Department’s investigation and consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, the driver, Mauricio Roberto Melgar Delgado has been charged with Felony Hit & Run causing Serious Injury/Death.

Delgado was taken into custody on July 18 and booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under a $50,000 unsecured bond issued by the magistrate.
