Asheville -- July 8, 2024: Asheville Police Department Press Release: Asheville Police Department Detectives are

investigating a shooting at a South Asheville apartment complex on Sunday evening.

Officers responded to the 300 block of Long Shoals Road around 7:57 p.m. on July 7th to investigate a report of a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers located the female victim outside an apartment, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Responding officers rendered emergency aid and spoke to the victim until the arrival of EMS. EMS transported the victim with life-threatening injuries to Mission Hospital for treatment.

During the course of their investigation, officers became aware of a potential armed suspect who may have remained inside the apartment. In the interest of safety, residents of the building were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Crisis Negotiation Officers made repeated attempts to establish communication with the suspect, both verbally and via phone, but these efforts were met with no response.

A drone was used to sweep the apartment to assess for safety. During the flight,  Gregory Wayne Holden (10/12/1946) was discovered deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head; next of kin has been notified.
