Haywood County -- August 8, 2025:  All westbound lanes of I-40 in Haywood County, west of Asheville, have now reopened to traffic after emergency repairs were completed following a fiery crash on Thursday.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced this morning that crews worked overnight to repair a section of the roadway that was severely damaged in a dump truck crash and subsequent fire.

The incident, which occurred yesterday, forced the closure of all westbound lanes, causing significant traffic backups.

The crash happened near exit 33 when a dump truck experienced a tire blowout, struck the median, and overturned, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The vehicle then caught fire, causing damage to the pavement that required immediate repair.

While a partial reopening of some lanes was expected last night, NCDOT crews successfully completed the full repairs, and the entire westbound side of I-40 is now open to drivers. Motorists should still use caution and be aware of any remaining work zones as they travel through the area.
