As Hurricane Dorian’s effects arrive in North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper today urged North Carolinians stay safe and to stay off the roads.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Hurricane Dorian raked the coastal Carolinas with howling, window-rattling winds and sideways rain Thursday, spinning off tornadoes and knocking out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses as it pushed northward toward the dangerously exposed Outer Banks.

(ASHEVILLE, N.C. - September 1, 2019) - Just before 2 a.m. this morning Asheville Police Department (APD) responded to a call at Hillcrest Apartments regarding a possible shooting. Upon arrival officers found 36 year-old Leon Bernard White, Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound outside of Building 13. White was transported to Mission Hospital where he died.

By Executive Order today, Governor Roy Cooper lifted restrictions on transportation to ensure critical needs like fuel, medicine and water can get to those affected by Hurricane Dorian if it hits North Carolina. The Order also lifts restrictions on equipment needed to repair utilities and remove debris so those tools are easier to mobilize after the storm.

ACCUWHEATHER: State of Emergency declared in 4 states; Dorian makes landfall in Bahamas as Category 5. 

On Sept. 6, Asheville City Council will hold a worksession on affordable housing. The session will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the U.S. Cellular Center Banquet Hall, 87 Haywood St.
