Man Arrested and Charged After Looting Helene Victims
Buncombe County -- November 22, 2024: Buncombe County Sheriff's Office Tyson Emrys Neal Pike is facing multiple charges for stealing from people in his community
who lost their homes to slides in the area during Hurricane Helene. One of the victims was swept away in a slide and
was rescued hours later.
On November 12th, Detectives with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of stolen property from the area of Lakey Gap Acres near Black Mountain. The area was heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. Pike is a resident in the community and was seen looting from destroyed homes in the area.
The victims also noticed fraudulent charges on their credit cards and were unable to find their identifying documents when they returned to their homes. On November 18th, Detectives executed two search warrants on Pike’s previous home on Brierley Hill and his current home on Lakey Gap Acres.
Deputies recovered four confirmed stolen firearms, stolen ids, and credit cards belonging to the victims, and what is believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Executive Lieutentant Bryon Crisp is part of our leadership team in District 1, where this crime happened. Executive Lieutenant Crisp says, “the residents of Buncombe County have suffered incredible losses. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office takes reports of victims being exploited seriously and will investigate such crimes fully.”
