400+ Sign Open Letter for Immediate Eviction Moratorium WNC Post Helene
Asheville -- November 21, 2024: In an open letter addressed to Governor Roy Cooper, the Council of State,
Chief Justice Paul Newby, and members of the North Carolina General Assembly, over 400 elected officials, clergy, business and nonprofit leaders and concerned individuals from 20 counties across western North Carolina are urgently calling for immediate action to address the escalating housing crisis caused by Hurricane Helene.
The letter highlights the catastrophic impacts of Hurricane Helene, described as the most destructive hurricane in the state's history. With over 126,000 homes damaged, widespread business closures, and delays in state and federal rental assistance, thousands of residents face imminent eviction.
The letter states, "Our communities are grappling with an unprecedented crisis. With November rent due and eviction filings already underway, the need for action is urgent. Without intervention, we face not only displacement but a long-term economic disaster." "This crisis is not just about housing—it threatens to destabilize our schools, businesses, and essential services."
The letter asks for both an eviction moratorium for WNC and increased rental assistance for affected households. The signers urge the General Assembly to allocate more robust funding for rental assistance, emphasizing that the current allocation of $1 million for the region is insufficient.
