Asheville -- June 2, 2024: A wanted felon for assaulting an officer and possessing crack cocaine

was found and detained by detectives and officers of the Asheville Police Department.

Bruce Edward Smith, wanted for failing to appear in court on drug charges, was approached by an officer in the Livingston Street neighborhood on May 30 at 1:54 p.m. while on regular patrol. Smith attacked a cop and ran away during the exchange.

Smith was apprehended by APD detectives for his outstanding warrants and additional charges related to the previous incident later that afternoon after they discovered him in the surrounding neighborhood. It was discovered that he had illegal substances on him when he was being arrested.

Smith was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility under NO BOND (ineligible for release) by a magistrate due to the Pretrial Integrity Act.
