Newfound Gap Road Closed as Heavy Rains Cause Landslide
Great Smokies National Park -- August 2, 2025: Heavy rain on August 1. caused a landslide on the Tennessee side of Newfound Gap Road between mile marks 12 and 13.
Walker Camp Prong, which runs next to the road, eroded part of it, damaging an area of around 100 feet and making the southbound lane greatly comprimised.
The National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration are also looking at the damage right now. We recommend use Interstate 40 as a different route for people who want to travel between North Carolina and Tennessee. The park is getting ready to partially reopen on the North Carolina side of the park, from Oconaluftee to Newfound Gap, early next week. This partial reopening will let people from North Carolina go to Kuwohi from the park's North Carolina side.
US441/Newfound Gap Road is closed right now because a slide happened overnight between mile markers 12 and 13, which is south of the Alum Cave Trailhead. The park is looking into the slide and will let people know more as they find out more.
