North Carolinians May Be Eligible for Compensation in Apotex Generic Drug Price-Fixing Settlement
North Carolina -- Residents of North Carolina who purchased certain generic prescription drugs between May 2009 and December 2019 may be entitled to financial compensation as part of a settlement with drug manufacturer Apotex, according to the North Carolina Attorney General's office.
The announcement follows allegations that Apotex conspired with other pharmaceutical companies over several years to unlawfully inflate the prices of various generic medications, limiting competition and forcing consumers to pay more.
"For years, Apotex broke the law by working with other drug companies to raise prices on generic drugs," said North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson in a statement released April 22, 2025. "And North Carolinians ended up paying more for medicine they need. If you bought any of these medicines, you may be able to get money back. Please take a moment to check."
Attorney General Jackson, as part of a bipartisan coalition involving 50 Attorneys General, is involved in finalizing a $39.1 million settlement that Apotex agreed to in principle last year. This settlement addresses the company's alleged role in the price-fixing conspiracy. Beyond the financial component, Apotex has agreed to cooperate with the states' ongoing investigations into the generic drug industry, implement measures to ensure fair competition, and commit to complying with antitrust laws moving forward. The Attorneys General are reportedly working to expedite the settlement process.
