Gov Cooper Urges Company to Keep Canton Mill Open
Raleigh -- March 17, 2023: In a move to preserve jobs and support
the economy of Canton, North Carolina,
Governor Roy Cooper has written a letter to Pactiv Evergreen, urging the
company to "explore all options" to keep the town's paper mill open.
The Canton mill, which has been in operation for over 100 years and is one of the largest employers in the region,
recently announced plans to shut down, citing financial struggles and market pressures. The closure would result in
the loss of over 300 jobs and have a significant impact on the local economy.
In the letter, Governor Cooper acknowledges the challenges faced by the paper industry and the difficult decision that
Pactiv Evergreen faces. However, he also emphasizes the importance of the mill to the community and the state as a whole, stating that "the loss of these jobs would have a devastating impact on the families and communities who depend on them."
The Governor goes on to express his willingness to work with the company and explore potential solutions to keep the mill open. He suggests that Pactiv Evergreen consider utilizing state resources, such as economic development grants and workforce training programs, to address any operational or financial challenges.
The closure of the Canton paper mill would be a significant blow to the state's paper industry, which has already seen several mills shut down in recent years. Governor Cooper's letter demonstrates a commitment to supporting North Carolina's manufacturing sector and ensuring that workers and communities are not left behind in the transition to a more sustainable economy.
It remains to be seen how Pactiv Evergreen will respond to the Governor's letter, but the message is clear: North Carolina is committed to working with businesses to find solutions that benefit both the company and the community.
