Tour Smith-McDowell House Museum
& WNC History Gallery Rooms
The Museum is OPEN for pre-booked tours Thursday – Saturday.

Operating Hours
Tours are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis Thursday – Saturday at 10:30 AM, 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM, and 3:00 PM. Tour reservations last for 1 hour to allow time for cleaning between groups. Please arrive on time to ensure you have enough time to complete your tour. 
Reserve Tickets
To ensure the safety of our visitors, staff, and volunteers, we are open for timed, self-guided, pre-booked tours of the historic Smith-McDowell House and Western North Carolina exhibit rooms.

To tour the house or exhibit galleries, please pre-book tickets through our online ticket system or by calling 828-253-9231 or emailing smh@wnchistory.org.

All visitors, staff, and volunteers are required to wear masks while inside the building.

We are less than 2 miles from the center of downtown Asheville.

There are several designated parking spots near the house once you turn onto the gravel drive that surrounds the house. For larger parties or tour buses, you may also use the paved lot located to the right of the house, which is owned by Asheville-Buncombe Community College.

After parking, proceed to the porch on the front of the house to begin your tour. You will be greet by a docent on the porch.

Accessibility
If anyone in your party would prefer not to climb stairs (there are eight stairs up to the front porch); please proceed to the back door via the rock-paved walkway at the rear of the house, located just off the gravel parking area. Ring the doorbell and someone will be with you shortly.

We strive to serve all our visitors. However, the Museum is a multi-story historic structure surrounded by gravel walkways.

By using our back entrance that is adjacent to designated an accessible parking space, all visitors have full access to our main level, which includes two period rooms and our exhibit galleries.
