South Carolina Man Charged in Rutherfordton Murder

Rutherfordton -- February 3, 2024: The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting off Chase High Road on November 18, 2023.

 The victim, Robert Nelon, was shot in the abdomen and taken to the hospital. Nelon died several days later from his injuries. The matter was referred to the Criminal Investigations Division, and an extensive investigation commenced. Following a protracted investigation and several interviews, the case was submitted to a Grand Jury in Rutherford County on January 22nd, 2024, and a true bill of indictment was issued for William Arthur Steele for second-degree murder.

On February 1, 2024, William Arthur Steele of Spartanburg, South Carolina surrendered to the Rutherford County Detention Center. Steel received a $6000,000 secured bond.
