GRANTS

The Department of Public Safety administers federal criminal justice block grants through the Governor's Crime Commission and homeland security grants through the Division of Emergency Management.

Governor's Crime Commission Grants
The Governor's Crime Commission administers federal block grants for criminal justice, juvenile justice, and victims service programs in North Carolina. The Commission administers about $100 million of grants each year and assures that money is disbursed according to federal and state governmental regulations during the life of the grants.

The grants are awarded to government, education and social service agencies for innovative programs in the following areas:

Victims of Crime
Violence Against Women
Drug Control and System Improvement
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
Law Enforcement

The State Homeland Security Grant Program
The State Homeland Security Grant Program, provides funds to help state and local units of government prevent, deter, respond to, and recover from incidents of terrorism involving the use of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive weapons and cyber attacks. This includes responders in cities, counties, and state agencies.

Crime Data & Crime Prevention

As part of the Criminal Information and Identification Section, the Crime Reporting Unit is responsible for the collection of data from law enforcement agencies across North Carolina. These data are then compiled for several major statistical programs.
