Health on Wheels: Buncombe County's Mobile Unit Brings Care Closer to You
Buncombe County -- Access to vital public health services has taken a significant step forward in Buncombe County with the launch of the "Public Health on Wheels" mobile unit. Rolling out in May/June 2024, this initiative by the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services is designed to bring essential care directly to residents, particularly those in historically underserved, low-income, and rural areas.
The mobile unit is a specially equipped, spacious recreational vehicle (RV), a considerable upgrade from previous mobile efforts. It boasts two private examination rooms, a bathroom, a phlebotomy (blood drawing) station, and is fully air-conditioned, ensuring a comfortable and confidential environment for receiving services. This expanded capacity allows for more comprehensive care delivery on the go.
Bringing Services Closer to Home
The core purpose of "Public Health on Wheels" is to break down barriers to healthcare access. By literally bringing services into communities, the unit aims to overcome challenges like transportation, time constraints, and lack of local facilities. The five-person team, funded through 2025, is dedicated to building trust and ensuring that all Buncombe County residents have equitable access to the health resources they need.
What Services Are Offered?
The mobile unit offers a wide array of critical public health services, making it a convenient and accessible option for many routine health needs:
Vaccinations and Vaccine Record Reviews: Ensuring individuals are up-to-date on their immunizations.
Rapid HIV and Hepatitis C Testing: Providing quick and confidential screening for these important health conditions.
Harm Reduction Resources and Education: Offering support and information for individuals and families impacted by substance use.
Community Resource Navigation: Connecting residents with other vital social and health services available in the county.
Health Education: Providing valuable information on a variety of health topics to promote wellness.
Looking ahead, the mobile unit plans to expand its offerings to include STI screening, education, and treatment, as well as comprehensive reproductive health services, further enhancing its role as a community health hub.
