Special Olympics Buncombe County Athlete Medals at the World Games
Buncombe County -- Buncombe County Government Press Release: Stephen Foster, a Special Olympics Buncombe County alpine skier and
Fairview resident, has made a victorious return from the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Representing Special Olympics USA, Foster competed alongside 1,500 other athletes from 102 countries.
Foster received a silver medal in the super giant slalom, or super-G, which is an alpine skiing speed event, and a bronze medal in the giant slalom, which is a technical event. He also received fourth place in the slalom.
The multi-sport athlete has been competing in Special Olympics for almost 20 years. He was originally selected for the 2021 World Games, which was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so this competition has been years in the making for Foster.
Although the ski and snowboarding season is over, the Special Olympics Buncombe County Spring Games are on their way. Mark your calendar for the Games on Thursday, May 1 at T.C. Roberson High School and on Thursday, May 8 at A.C. Reynolds High School. The opening ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. for each event.
