Manna Food Bank, Feeding Western North Carolina
As we move into a new year, it's always helpful to look back to get a better understanding of where we are going.
We recently released our 2023 Annual Report, which includes many eye-opening statistics. During the 2023 fiscal year, we distributed nearly 21 million pounds of food, which is the equivalent of 17.5 million meals for neighbors in need. On average, that's 137,169 people a month. (And this isn't including the later months of the year, which proved to be some of the highest in MANNA's history).
Let us move into the new year with confidence that we can all work together to end hunger in Western North Carolina....

RIP Matthew Perry
RIP Matthew Perry. A talented man who struggled like so many.... Gone too soon. The thing that I'm most proud of in my life is that if a stranger came up to me and said, 'I can't stop drinking. I can't stop drinking. Can you help me?' I can say, 'Yes, I can help you.'
"I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything again," he tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week's cover story. "I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober — and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction — to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people."
When he was first admitted to the hospital, "the doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live," he recalls. "I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that's called a Hail Mary. No one survives that."
May his books, his words, what he passed on, live on and help those in need....
The Positivity of Having a Dog in Your Life
Having a dog in my life has brought me so much joy and positivity. The unconditional love and companionship that they offer is truly priceless. No matter what kind of day I'm having, my dog is always there to greet me with a wagging tail and a big smile. I love taking my dog on walks and exploring new places together, which has helped me to stay active and enjoy the outdoors even more. Not to mention, having a furry friend to cuddle up with on the couch is the perfect way to unwind after a long day. Overall, I truly believe that having a dog in your life can bring so much positivity and happiness, and I feel grateful every day to have my furry companion by my side....
How to Help a Community After Losing Its Major Employer
If your community has recently lost its major employer, it can be a tough time for everyone. Job losses can be devastating for families and the local economy as a whole. However, there are steps that you can take to help your community during this difficult time.
One of the most important things that you can do is to support local businesses. If there are small businesses in your community, make an effort to shop there instead of going to bigger chain stores. This will help keep money in the local economy and provide a boost for these businesses.
Another way to help is to volunteer your time. Non-profit organizations and community groups often need help, especially during times of crisis. You can offer your skills and expertise to help these organizations in any way possible.
Finally, if you have connections to other industries or companies, try to encourage them to invest in your community. This may not be an immediate solution, but it can help in the long term. It's also important to keep a positive attitude and stay optimistic about the future of your community.
Remember, while losing a major employer can be difficult, it doesn't have to define your community forever. With hard work and determination, your community can bounce back and become even stronger than before....
