Buncombe County -- Press Release Buncombe County Sheriff's Office: A Buncombe County Sheriffโ€™s Office Animal Control Deputy is

recovering after receiving a serious injury

from being attacked by a dog. It happened on Snowhill Church Road in Candler around 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon. Deputy D. Robinson responded to a call of a dog running loose in the area.

During the investigation, Deputy Robinson knocked on the door of a residence. When the resident answered the door, a large dog ran out, charged the Deputy, bit him on his hand, and would not let go. To protect himself, the Deputy tried to use his taser but was unsuccessful. He drew and fired his service weapon, ultimately killing the dog. Deputy Robinson was treated at Mission Hospital for serious bite injuries to his left hand.

An investigation is underway into the initial and previous calls to this location. The Sheriffโ€™s Office Internal Affairs Unit will review the incident per the agencyโ€™s protocol which requires that anytime a deputy fires their firearm, the incident will be investigated.
Chief of Staff Donnie Parks stated that โ€œthe injury sustained by our deputy is very unfortunate. We are thankful that he will recover from his injuries. Our community is fortunate he was not injured more seriously. We are also fortunate that no citizen was injured by this dangerous animal.โ€
