Burntshirt Vineyards Faces Devastation After Collpase

Chimney Rock: October 23, 2024: Burnshirt Vineyards a cherished establishment in Western North Carolina, suffered a major structural collapse following the impact of Tropical Storm Helene. The front section of the vineyard’s main facility was severely damaged, leading to a public notice restricting access to the surrounding area. Local authorities have urged the public to heed these restrictions as relief and recovery efforts continue.

On Friday, October 18, the front section of Burntshirt Vineyards collapsed, marking a significant loss for the community. Tropical Storm Helene had already brought severe flooding and winds to the area earlier in the week, leading to extensive structural damage to the vineyard's main building. The storm caused heavy rains, which saturated the hillside property, weakening the foundation and eventually causing a collapse that affected both the wine production area and the popular tasting rooms.

The destruction has been a sobering reminder of the storm’s impact on the region. Burntshirt Vineyards, a key attraction and business in the area, now faces a challenging recovery as they assess the full extent of the damage. The collapse has halted operations indefinitely, and there are concerns about the stability of the remaining structures. The surrounding vineyard fields also suffered damage due to flooding and debris, threatening the viability of upcoming harvests.

 

In response to the devastation, a public notice was issued on October 19, alerting residents and visitors about the dangers posed by the collapse and ongoing recovery efforts. The notice emphasized that the area from the Village west to Bat Cave is currently restricted. “Unauthorized individuals are hampering relief efforts, debris removal, and road construction, as well as placing themselves in danger,” the notice stated.

 

Authorities have reported that some individuals have disregarded these warnings, attempting to enter the restricted zone, which has complicated the work of emergency crews and volunteers. Officials are urging the public to stay clear of the area for their own safety and to allow for efficient recovery efforts.

On Sunday, October 20, at around 9:00 AM, representatives from FEMA arrived at Burntshirt Vineyards to conduct a detailed assessment of the damage. The inspection team, accompanied by local emergency management officials, evaluated the collapsed structures, checked for further risks, and coordinated plans for debris removal and stabilization of the remaining buildings.

 

During the visit, FEMA officials stressed the importance of adhering to safety measures, especially within the restricted areas. “We understand that this is a beloved part of the community, but safety must come first. Our teams are working closely with local authorities to expedite the recovery, but we need the public’s cooperation,” said a FEMA spokesperson.

Local officials have been quick to respond to the situation, deploying resources to support Burntshirt Vineyards and the wider community. Henderson County officials highlighted the need for patience and vigilance, stating that safety concerns are the priority. “The destruction caused by Tropical Storm Helene is extensive, and the situation remains dangerous.
